Grow Kit instructions:
Step 1:
Roll up your sleeves, crack a cold one, or soda, turn the music up and take a few moments to focus your intent. You, my friend, are going to grow some mushrooms!!!
Today, you are starting your first grow kit and I am so excited for you. Inside your grow kit is a fully colonized grow block and a mushroom mister bottle. Start off by opening your grow kit and remove the mushroom mister from the box. Go ahead and reclose the grow kit box. Verify that the grow box kit is closed again and then fill the mushroom mister with good ‘ol tap water.
Step 2:
There is perforation on the front of the kit, press around and remove the perforated circle mushroom logo to expose the grow kit bag. What you just removed is where the mushrooms will grow.
With a clean and freshly washed sharp knife, cut an “X” in from one side to the other. Don’t worry about cutting too deep or too shallow. Get in there and cut it already :) DO NOT PEEL OPEN THE “X”.
Step 3:
Placement of the grow kit should be in an area that is out of direct sunlight and the same temperature of your home.
Most home temperatures are between 65-72, which is perfect for growing mushrooms.
Kitchen countertop or kitchen table is usually a good place to start. It’s not recommended to place the grow kit in a closet or in your basement.
Mist the cut “X” 3-5 times daily with the provided mushroom mister.
Now the easy part is done, let’s crack onto the hard part. Waiting. It can take 5-12 days until you can start seeing the mushrooms forming. Don’t touch, be patient, almost there. Continue misting the mushroom until they are ready to harvest. Seriously, don’t forget mushrooms need moisture to grow. The mushrooms do not need any help, when they are ready they will emerge from the cut “X.”
Step 4:
Once the mushrooms have emerged, continue to be patient, you’re almost there. Most mushroom farmers wait till the caps of the mushrooms have flattened out. Not at our farm. We harvest for taste, texture and shelf longevity, that is why we harvest before the cap flattens out. That way you can ensure that your mushrooms have the best flavors, firmer textures, and longer shelf life for storing.
Harvest your mushrooms before the cap fully flattens out. To harvest your mushrooms, grab the base of the mushroom firmly, and rock back and forth until it breaks off the block. Cut away any substrate that may still be attached to the base of the mushroom before consuming. Depending on what type of mushroom kit you bought, some mushrooms have a wonderful base that is edible and shouldn’t be discarded. Gold oyster, for instance, forms a base that is highly sought after as a delicacy that should be fully enjoyed.
You do not need to wash your mushrooms. They can be chopped and cooked up right away.
Growers Tip:
You can get multiple harvests from one grow kit. Try for a second flush! Remove any remaining bits of mushroom from the substrate block that may have been left from the first harvest. Keep spraying the same opening for another 5-10 days and repeat the growing process over again. Usually on consecutive harvests it will be less, expect around half from your first harvest. For all you gardening people out there. You can break up the grow kit and use it as a soil amendment. It is rich in nitrogen and full of nutrients that worms and beneficial microbes love.
